Today I got home from work early so I decided to change my oil. Had to use channel locks to get the drain bolt off because I rounded off some of the edges so I couldn’t get a good grip with the wrench. (I had a new one to replace it) Followed that up by tightening the hell out of the oil filter because I got mixed up which way was loose. Ate up all my free time. But I got the job done, so there’s that.

That looks like a bad time. No worries though, been there & done that!

Channel locks or stabbing a screwdriver into the side to pry it off.

Meanwhile Toyota is over here all

One time, I got my lefty loosey righty tighty backwards while attempting to remove a brake caliper. Managed to snap a something like grade 10 hardness bolt, with a 3/8 ratchet, while laying on the ground and pushing with my foot.

Getting the caliper off after that was fun, but luckily the remaining stud came out by hand once the caliper was out of the way.

Haven’t done that one again since.

congrats - there absolutely is value in the recovery. (There are days where every freakin’ think I touch goes to sh!t...)

That’s usually what oil filters look like when a quick lube place is the one that installed it.

1/4 turn people!!!!

Put the wrench down!

Funny, I felt the same way today. Assisted in breaking a bolt that helps hold down the engine mount on a Honda. Luckily, it was my school’s, so no harm done but my group hard core forgot our loose + tight directions. Funny thing is I told the dude who was loosening it to change the direction on the air gun. He said: “I think it’s going the right way” and continues on to destroy that bolt. He’s a nice guy, but has autism. Don’t ask me how he’s in my class. Rough day.

I did the same exact thing. Turned a 15 minute change into a 2 hour ordeal. The filter was up in an inaccessible place and I had cranked and cranked a degree at a time going the wrong way.... how does that happen? Oh well, live and learn. Screwdriver, channel locks and screwdriver and channel locks and ended up taking the filter off in pieces, cause I tightened it so much. So stupid. So you’re not alone. And I consider myself a pretty mechanically inclined person. I just got done pulling the intake and decarboning valves on my S8 before Christmas. Sometimes we just do stupid stuff. Guarantee I won’t do it again though

Yeah, I changed the oil in my wife’s ‘00 Explorer yesterday. I was expecting the worst, as I had yet to do an oil change on that truck, as she got it from her parents a few months ago and works next to a auto service shop. Five quarts in, but only four quarts out. I’m going to have to remind myself to check the oil in her truck more often.

Maybe look into an oil drain valve? I’ve loved mine, no tools needed for oil changes and after lots of offroading and a few track days the valve hasn’t accidentally opened which I initially worried about

The problem occurred because I used channel locks to tighten after I couldn’t break it free with my hand. Then I realized after turning it a bit with them that I was going the wrong way

You’d think after countless hours of working on cars we’d get that right all the time. But the different orientation of the bolts (or this case oil filter) makes you think differently

On the plus side, last time I changed the oil I found it was a lot easier to reach the filter if I took off the passenger side wheel. Since I rotate my tires at the same time it’s not an extra step and if I turn the right way it does speed things up

Use the right hand rule.

Using your right hand - point your thumb in the direction you want the bolt to go. Curl the rest of your fingers into a C shape, the direction of your fingers is the direction you want to twist the bolt.

Kinja'd!!!

Really helpful for bolts that are behind you while you’re upside down and sideways when right tighty doesn’t cut it.

Unless it’s a left-hand threaded bolt. Those are just evil.
